Make sure to choose a  surgeon with expertise and experience in rhinoplasty procedure.  Choose a surgeon who has passion in the procedure and strives for excellence. It is important to take your time to decide on the rhinoplasty surgeon because revision rhinoplasty rate is 10-20% and it is a difficult procedure

During your consultation with Dr Sandhya Balasubramanyan for the rhinoplasty surgery in Bangalore, you will be discussing about-

  • Your concerns about the nose shape and size- which part of the nose bothers you the most
  • Your rhinoplasty goals and what can be achieved realistically

  • Photographs would be taken and computer simulation of the probable postoperative results
  • Explanation about the surgical procedure , the postoperative care and expected outcome timelines.
  • blood investigations needed and CT scan of nose if you have functional breathing problem

The following are the good candidates  for rhinoplasty:

Good candidates are adults who have completed facial growth  and have realistic expectations. People with overall good health and nonsmokers fall in the category of good candidates.

You will be advised to stop taking blood thinners of any herbal supplements that thin the blood at least  1 week in advance.

You will be advised to meet an anesthetist in case the surgery is under general anesthesia.

Procedure

Rhinoplasty is often done using local anesthesia if the correction is minor or a general anesthesia for total rhinoplasty. It is a day-care procedure but at times may require an overnight observation and stay in the hospital.

Rhinoplasty is performed either using a closed procedure, where incisions are hidden inside the nose, or an open procedure, where an incision is made across the columella, the narrow strip of tissue that separates the two nostrils. Skin is gently raised allowing access to the underlying bone and cartilage. An overly large nose may be reduced by removing bone or cartilage. Sometimes surgery of the nose may require the addition of cartilage grafts. These cartilage are taken from septum, and occasionally from ear or ribs. If the septum is deviated, it can be straightened and projections inside the nose reduced to improve breathing.

Skin is re-draped over the nose and incisions are closed. A splint is placed to conform to the new shape. A nasal pack may be inserted in your nostrils for 24 hours to control bleeding.

Recovery and After care

The following tips would help you in recovery after rhinoplasty-

  • Use of cold compresses help reduce swelling, pain and bleeding
  • 2 pillows to keep the head elevated for 1 week after surgery
  • No strenuous activities for four weeks
  • Cleaning the nostrils with saline tipped buds and apply antiseptic cream along suture line
  • Nasal decongestant drops
  • Hot foods to be avoided for a week
  • Medicines as prescribed by the surgeon
  • Sneeze should be channeled through the mouth for 7-10 days
  • Sun exposure to be avoided

Mild bruises and swelling around the eyes are common after rhinoplasty. Sutures are removed after 1 week, splint is maintained for 10-14 days. Nasal tip swelling takes a few weeks to resolve to give the final result of a sculpted nose. Dr Sandhya would advise you to start the nasal taping for tip edema or swelling starting 2 weeks after surgery and continuing it for  6 weeks postsurgery at night.

You can start your work 1- 2 weeks after surgery once the swelling subsides on the nose.

Strenuous activity like gym workouts, sports and running is to be withheld for 4-6 weeks atleast.

Risks and complications

Though the risks associated with a nose job surgery are very minor, you need to be aware of it. Here are a list of possible side effects of rhinoplasty:

  • Mild bruising and swelling which lasts for 2  weeks
  • Scar along the lower base of nose which fades over time
  • Poor healing,  asymmetries due to residual skin swelling and nasal obstruction and infection are rare
  • Possible repeat surgery- revision rhinoplasty in 10-20%

Revision Rhinoplasty

This  is a surgical procedure done to correct any residual asymmetries or deformities after your first rhinoplasty.

You can seek a revision rhinoplasty for following reasons

  • Tip asymmetry or unfavouarble aesthetics of tip
  • Residual deviation  which needs full correction and septum reconstruction
  • Asymmetric ala or nostril
  • Residual hump

Dr Sandhya is an expert in revision rhinoplasty. She would advise you to be cautious before deciding on the procedure because nose reshaping after primary surgery takes 6 months to 1 year. Ideally  it would be best to wait for a year before opting for this procedure. Discuss all the options thoroughly before going ahead with a revision surgery.  Caution be noted in individuals with thicker sebaceous skin wherein the results of nose job is suboptimal. In these individuals revision surgery can sometimes increase the tip edema.

Non Surgical rhinoplasty / Liquid rhinoplasty

It is an outpatient injectable procedure  whereby dermal fillers are injected into specific areas of the nose to bring a desired effect. It is a temporary procedure and results last for 1 to 1.5 years. It can be done if you want to:

  • Add volume to nose
  • To correct the tip and give it  more projection- in underprojected nose
  • Camouflage humps on nose
  • Correct deviated nose appearance

Non Surgical nose job is an excellent method to make minor changes on the nose and find out how it would look on your face. If you want long lasting results of a nose job, surgical rhinoplasty is better.

A numbing cream is initially applied on the nose 45mts before the procedure. Prefilled syringes of hyaluronic acid are injected in specific areas. Mild bruising, swelling can appear which lasts only for a day or two. Gentle Cold compress is recommended.

The advantages of nonsurgical rhinoplasty include - no downtime, faster recovery, no scarring, immediate results and reversible changes.

Non surgical rhinoplasty is not recommended if you are looking for permanent results, have autoimmune diseases or allergies to component of fillers, or have bleeding disorders.
