Breast Reduction is a cosmetic procedure, medically known as reduction mammoplasty, that reduces the size, weight, and volume of overly large breasts while improving their shape and position. It minimizes the areola size of enlarged breasts, and also corrects the sagging breasts. Dr Sandhya Balasubramanyan (MS General Surgery, MCh Plastic Surgery), with more than two decades of experience across cosmetic surgery, performs breast reduction surgery in Bangalore at Manipal Hospital, with a vision to improve the comfort, confidence, and aesthetics of women with enlarged breasts.
Dr Sandhya believes that breast reduction is not simply about removing excess tissue—it is about creating breasts that are proportionate to the body, relieving physical discomfort, and helping women feel more confident in their daily lives.
Vertical Scar Breast Reduction
Also known as the ‘lollipop’ technique, this approach is commonly used for moderate breast reduction. It involves fewer scars while effectively reshaping and lifting the breasts.
Wise Pattern Breast Reduction
Commonly called the ‘anchor’ technique, this method is suitable for larger breast reductions and significant breast sagging. It allows the removal of a greater volume of breast tissue while achieving comprehensive reshaping.
Liposuction-Assisted Breast Reduction
If breast enlargement is primarily due to fatty tissue, liposuction may be used alone or in combination with surgical breast reduction techniques.

Breast reduction surgery includes several benefits for women with enlarged breasts:
Dr. Sandhya Balasubramanyan performs breast reduction surgery in Bangalore at Manipal Hospital using these simple steps:
Step 1: Consultation and Surgical Planning
Dr Sandhya conducts a detailed assessment of breast size, breast shape, skin quality, nipple position, body proportions, and patient expectations. Surgical goals are discussed to determine the most appropriate technique. A few bood tests , Ultrasound scan or a mammogram is done before the surgery. Discuss in detail the cup size possible with breast reduction , the scars , technique and recovery
Step 2: Anaesthesia
The procedure is performed under general anaesthesia to ensure patient comfort ensuring all the safety protocols
Step 3: Removal of Excess Tissue
Excess breast tissue, fat, and skin are carefully removed while preserving breast shape and symmetry. On an average 200-300 gms removal in each breast is 1 cup size reduction, 400-500gms is 2 cup size ,600-800gms per breat is approximately 3-4 cup size and more than 1 kgs is multiple cup size reduction.
Step 4: Breast Reshaping
The remaining breast tissue is sculpted to create a smaller, lifted, and more proportionate breast contour. The breast mound is created so that the upper pole is full .
Step 5: Nipple Repositioning
The nipple-areola complex is repositioned to a more youthful and aesthetically pleasing position while maintaining natural proportions. The 45-55 rule is applied to position it on the breast mound so that 45% of the fullness of breast is above the nipple and 55% below it .
Step 6: Closure
Incisions are meticulously closed, with dissolvable sutures and dressings are applied to support healing.
Step 7: Recovery
Patients receive detailed post-operative instructions and follow-up care to ensure smooth healing and optimal results.

Patients trust Dr Sandhya Balasubramanyan for breast reduction surgery in Hyderabad because of these reasons:
Many women experience significant improvement in neck, shoulder, and back discomfort after surgery because excess breast fat is removed, and they feel lighter.
Yes, women can breastfeed after surgery, but breastfeeding ability depends on the surgical technique used and the amount of tissue removed. Techniques that leave the nipple and areola attached to the underlying breast tissue have a higher chance of retaining milk production.
Breast reduction surgery doesn’t generally have any kind of risks when performed by an experienced and qualified plastic surgeon. However, like any other surgery, few risks related to it are: scarring, changes in nipple sensation, asymmetry, and infection.
The best age for breast reduction is above 18 years of age, as breasts are fully developed, and the body has attained physical and emotional maturity.
It takes almost 2 to 4 hours for a breast reduction surgery to complete. It might take longer, if the doctor is using any other combination, like breast lift, liposuction, etc. The timing is influenced by the amount of fatty tissue being removed from the breasts and repositioning them with a balanced and natural look.
