Rhinoplasty or a nose reshaping procedure is done for functional or aesthetic improvement of the nose . It helps in balancing the proportion of the nose with the rest of face . Sometimes a chin enhancement is also added which complements the rhinoplasty results . Patients seek rhinoplasty for reducing the hump on nose , correct a droopy or bulky tip , reduce a nasal wide flare , or correct a flat bridge . Sometimes a septorhinoplasty can be done for correcting a deviated septum , collapsed nose , birth defect as in cleft lip and palate or following an injury.
This blog focuses on the step by step guide to rhinoplasty in Bangalore. It would help in understanding the different types of rhinoplasty , preoperative preparation and postoperative care.
Broadly classified as open and closed rhinoplasty.
Open rhinoplasty is a procedure chosen for more detailed correction of nose which includes deviation , hump , broad tip and need or cartilage support of the nose . This is the technique used in Structural rhinoplasty where the basic structure and support of nose is addressed as the name suggests.
Closed rhinoplasty is a procedure in which incisions are in concealed locations inside your nostril and itys ideal for minor corrections of nose , like a hump removal or a tip reduction . It is not suited for someone with deviation of septum needing reconstruction o septum.
Your surgeon would choose the best approach for you based on the corrections needed.
A detailed consultation is essential to discuss your aesthetic and functional issues . Your plastic surgeon might examine inside the nostrils to check for deviation or turbinate hypertrophy.
Things to note in consultation
The procedure - A rhinoplasty procedure would typically last for 1.5-4 hours . It is done under local or general anesthesia . You will be advised admission for a day or can be discharged the same day . An insurance coverage is possible in patients with DNS and functional breathing issues with prior documentation.
1. Immediately after surgery- A nasal pack can be placed inside and you need to breathe through the mouth for the first 6-8 hours. The general anesthesia takes 4-6 hours to wear off. Water sips can be taken after 2-3 hours and you can take solid food after 4-5 hours if there is no nausea or vomiting . You will be given painkillers adequately.
2. First 24-48 hours until 1 week - The swelling around the nose , undereye and cheek might set in during this time . Cold compress and keeping the head end elevated on pillows would help in the reduction of inflammatory swelling. Pain killers would be prescribed for heaviness of head and discomfort.
3. First month- Swelling begins to subside and nose starts to take shape. It is normal to experience some tightness of lips and hardness in nasal tip.
Breathing becomes comfortable and you will no longer need the decongestant drops.
Continue nasal taping as it helps in reduction of swelling of tip.
Scar creams or gels would be prescribed. This helps in fading the scars away.
End of first month you can restart your physical activities to full extent.
4. First 3-6 months
Final results become visible as the swelling subsides completely . You will be happy looking at the newly gained sculpted nose.
