Eyelid surgery is one of the top five cosmetic procedures chosen worldwide. It is second only to breas-t augmentation in women and rhinoplasty in men. We have always considered that eyelid surgery is for someone who is older than 45-50+, but the earliest signs of aging are usually noticed around the eyes for most of us as early as 30 years.
Hence the trend for periorbital rejuvenation has gained popularity in recent years . As early as 30-35 years you might notice laxity of the eyelid skin with loss of collagen and elastin. Stress, pollution, environmental factors, lack of sleep, smoking and lifestyle changes can result in fine wrinkles around the lower lid, hooding of upper eyelid , drooping of outer brows and sunken or puffy eyes appearance of lower lid. Though we can try a lot of home remedies to resolve the issue , these changes that appear at younger age are only going to progress as we age. The decision to treat these changes at an early age in fact delays aging for the next 10 -15 years.
For patients with mild hooding of upper eyelid skin, an incision less accutite radiofrequency based procedure, is beneficial in inducing production of collagen and elastin and giving a tighter eyelid. Anti wrinkle injections used for the crows feet relaxes the muscles around eyes and reduces wrinkles if taken regularly.
Under eye dermal fillers and cheek fillers also support the tissue around the eyes in patients with tear trough . Micro and Nanofat grafting can be used instead of fillers to the same effect.
Blepharoplasty as a surgical procedure can be considered in younger patients with moderate laxity of upper lid skin causing hooding of skin . This skin hooding can also interfere with eye makeup and makes them feel to have a less open and bright eyes. This can give them a sleepy eye appearance. Similarly lower eyelid tear troughs with eye bags are also candidates for blepharoplasty if injection of dermal fillers is unable to resolve the issue.
These younger patients will definitely benefit from a blepharoplasty surgery and delay the signs of aging.
Blepharoplasty is a simple day care procedure which can be done under local anesthesia and you can be discharged the same day . Wound healing takes a week's time. You may get a little bruising and swelling in the periorbital region for the first 2 weeks. Avoiding direct sun exposure, applying antiseptic cream along the suture line, keeping the wound clean, and cold compress in the first 48 hours helps in early healing of the suture line.
Though the results of blepharoplasty in younger patients are subtle, the outcome is a cleaner, brighter and well opened and rejuvenated eyes you have longed for. It can make a huge impact in your whole face which lasts for the next 10-15 years.
